MUD Update...

Sorry guys, having trouble with getting the forums set up properly. Hopefully our friendly webmaster will have it sorted out soon.

In the mean time, we're still at work! This week we've worked on updating the world to use wizarding currency: Sickles and Galleons. We may or may not use Knuts, as this would increase the complications of making purchases for all of you guys :) But yes. I'm sitting in Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlor right now. Diagon Alley is coming along, and nearing completion.

Wish *I* was sitting in Florean Fortescue's! :)

Looking forward to playing! Keep the updates coming. :)

CEH - 07 Nov 2004 12:30 am

That sounds so cool! *imagines herself sitting in Florean Fortescue's*

ebo - 07 Nov 2004 12:48 am

great!!! cant wait!!!

Somnio - 07 Nov 2004 06:20 am

I can't wait for this! All the other MUDs seem absolutely dull compared to this.

alex - 07 Nov 2004 08:16 am

crying it's not done yet?

Sam - 07 Nov 2004 08:46 am

This brings a smile to my face.

Stepshep - 07 Nov 2004 09:51 am

Kepp up the good work guys! smile

Arie - 07 Nov 2004 10:50 am

Don't put in knuts! lol. It'll make it too complicated! *sigh* I can barely count as it is, even if I'm using my handy-dandy fingers... wink

Craig - 07 Nov 2004 12:05 pm

You guys will like this. It's not that far yet but it it already amazing.

Goatman - 07 Nov 2004 12:30 pm

the knuts arn't used much in the books, so it wouldn't matter if they're not in there.

Kassia - 07 Nov 2004 12:32 pm

oh man, I cant wait for this whole thing to be finished! This whole program sounds like it will be one of my favorite things on the net, along with MNI, and browsing the mugglenet site!

Ohh... *crosses fingers* Hope it will be done soon! smile

Annie - 07 Nov 2004 02:31 pm

Wow I totally didn't even realize you weren't using the wizarding currency before. Yeah, using galleons and sickles will be more interesting...I dunno about knuts though, the MUD will be confusing enough on its own without the added confusion of counting out money >.>

Orion - 07 Nov 2004 04:46 pm

Hmmf. I want a sundae.

veedubgti - 07 Nov 2004 05:05 pm

Sounds Awesome. I can't wait to play! smile

james potter jr - 07 Nov 2004 07:15 pm

smile smile smile smile smile smile i wish they would finish the game!!! it sounds really good!

san - 07 Nov 2004 08:08 pm

I think it'll be too confuing to put knuts but cool anyway!

Aniline - 07 Nov 2004 10:35 pm

The code-base for the MUD is taken from another MUD. This other MUD used just gold and silver (100 silver = 1 gold). So our coders had to switch everything to galleons and sickles (17 sickles = 1 galleon). That was why we weren't using galleons and sickles to begin with. smile

annely - 08 Nov 2004 07:55 am

just can't wait...and I agree with everyone...knuts will be a little too confusing

Aniline - 08 Nov 2004 09:41 am

Personally, I'd like to have knuts in the game, just to make it more HP-like. I've seen MUDs with more than just 2 coins (some with up to like 5 or 6) in one currency. And some of these MUDs have multiple currency. It would be very cool if we have HP money as well as muggle money in the MUD, especially since there is a muggle London in the game. It would make sense to have to exchange your currency to muggle money to shop in London. wink

But that's just me. laughing

Oz - 08 Nov 2004 09:49 am

I'm with you on that one, Ani. I don't think it would get confusing at all and people would be surprised at what becomes second nature quickly when you have to use it. wink

jedde - 08 Nov 2004 11:26 am

ehhhh ...... I was just wondering .. where do you play ????? who won the name contest??? sorry if Im being stupid.... hehe... laughing

Aniline - 08 Nov 2004 12:53 pm

You can't play the MUD yet, it's still under developement. As far as I know, no one has won the name contest since a new name hasn't been picked yet.

Rowen - 08 Nov 2004 01:54 pm

I'll third the motion by Ani and Oz to have knuts in the game. I also like the idea of converting from muggle money. It just makes it more fun. Of course, my deciding factor is it: I'd be willing to wait an extra few days for knuts, but if it's going to take weeks to do, then scrap it.

Rowen - 08 Nov 2004 01:55 pm

*correction: deciding factor is time, not it*

Dragoon - 08 Nov 2004 05:31 pm

Go for the galleons. Go for it sickles and galleons only please

t2nazx2 - 08 Nov 2004 11:42 pm

Well, I will input my two cents...errr...knuts in! tongue hehehe

I think that whatever goes into the MUD will be acceptable. As for Aniline saying it will be more HP-like, I do agree. But I will be fine with either way. There is obviously soooo much work being put into this for all of us fans...that we will take what you give us and enjoy every bit of it. :)

Also, I have a question. Are there any websites that one could learn about MUD's so we are better prepared for this one? Maybe some starters, perhaps? I'm a newbie to all of this.

nerdinpink - 08 Nov 2004 11:44 pm

I'd like to see knuts in the game. More authentic.

Craig - 09 Nov 2004 12:13 am

If you want to check out a good MUD go to this link: http://simplemu.onlineroleplay.com/

The staff is working hard to get the game done. Diagon Alley is looking really good so far.

ebo - 09 Nov 2004 03:28 am

whats the addy to connect? or ip...

ebo - 09 Nov 2004 03:29 am

oh... lol.. never mind..... wink

Aniline - 09 Nov 2004 09:01 am

A favorite MUD of mine is the Discworld MUD: http://discworld.atuin.net/

It's based on the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett.

me - 09 Nov 2004 02:13 pm

boo! ha ha ha ha ha ha... ha okay then bye

CEH - 09 Nov 2004 03:06 pm

wassat me, what was the point of that post?

t2nazx2 - 09 Nov 2004 04:03 pm

Thanks Craig and Ani :) going to check them out now :)

t2nazx2 - 09 Nov 2004 05:00 pm

I just tried the Discworld one and I failed miserably!!!! crying I couldn't even find the brooch for the womble, not to mention I couldn't even fight the straw dummy! crying crying I'm doomed on this MUD! haha I can't fight a straw dummy, let alone the possibility of Lord Voldemort!

Craig - 09 Nov 2004 09:17 pm

Lol...Well you can always wait for us to finish this MUD. wink

CEH - 09 Nov 2004 09:47 pm

"let alone the possibility of Lord Voldemort!"

According to this storyline, both Voldemort and Harry die. smile So I don't think you have to worry about fighting Voldemort. Some one who comes into power after him, though.... *cough*I'llgettheresomeday!*cough*

You could also choose to be a friendly player and not fight at all.

t2nazx2 - 09 Nov 2004 09:49 pm

I was totally amazed at how much of an interaction there is though with the program itself. I had the utmost respect for the staff here before...but if you are completely writing one of these programs...well...I think my respect is immeasurable now. not think, I know...everyone working on this: Kudo's to you!

veedubgi - 09 Nov 2004 10:10 pm

To answer a question of CEH's on the previous board: No I never was a troll but a particular person on my network was.

Aniline - 09 Nov 2004 10:22 pm

With any MUD, including Discworld and the one we are making, it takes time to learn how they work and how to get good at them. Finding the brooch for the womble in the Discworld MUD is your first quests. It's not supposed to be easy. And the straw dummy is there just to get you some free levels in fighting. wink

CEH - 09 Nov 2004 10:55 pm

laughing Oh, okay, vee!

t2nazx2 - 09 Nov 2004 11:08 pm

I think I'll save all my time to learn how they work by using this one! At least I have read these books and know the premise of Hogwarts! smile Thanks though for the suggestion Ani! smile I did try it out...I might give it a go later if the mood strikes me! Again, kudos to the entire staff here!

Aniline - 09 Nov 2004 11:21 pm

When I first started playing Discworld, it took me a long time to get the hang of it. I died many times, took time off from it a few times, and made like a dozen different characters before I found one I liked.

I remember my first death... I had made a wizard, and I was spending my time getting lost in the main city (Ankh-Morpork). I would a door floating in midair (it was a portal) and I walked though it. Ended up in the Troll's Head Pub and died within two seconds from the auto-attack trolls. The wizard that has made the portal helped me get a new body and all my stuff back. smile

Just remember, with any game, it takes a bit of time to learn the control and commands. Even now, I'm still learning new things about MUDs that I have played for years. That's what's great about MUDs. They are so massive, that you will probably never know everything about them. You have to learn how to play it yourself. It's no fun to have someone show you how to do everything.

t2nazx2 - 10 Nov 2004 02:06 am

Ani, you will be proud of me...I went back and tried anything and everything I could and I finally found the brooch and gave it to the womble. wink smile

I stopped playing because I had too, not because I wanted too! hahaha laughing laughing

Thanks for your info and suggestions. smile

Rowen - 10 Nov 2004 05:10 pm

Hey Artemis - are you the same Artemis I once met on HOL?

Sup - 10 Nov 2004 05:14 pm

wink

Aniline - 10 Nov 2004 10:25 pm

Good for you t2nazx2! smile

(Warning: MUDs can be very addicting...)

Have fun! laughing

t2nazx2 - 10 Nov 2004 10:51 pm

I like the name Artemis. spelled backwards is interesting too. Simetra.

Anyway...I chose to enter the main city. And I pulled the grey lever so I would be neutral. I suck at the fighting. I ran across a corpse and got something from him. LOL that was fun. I'm still utterly amazed at all the work that goes into this. I know I keep repeating myself, but it's mind-boggling! All the detail and all the commands, etc. just for one area. Then all your different areas you can take after that room. Yeh! rambling again. You guys/gals rock. smile

Aniline - 11 Nov 2004 08:32 am

Everyone sucks at fighting when they first start out. Killing rats and cockroaches takes forever...

Anyway, join a guild. Then you can level your character skills and they can become better at fighting, magic, etc.

So far I've played every guild except warrior's guild. My favorites ended up being the theives and witches. Those were the two I have gotten characters in the furthest.
