A Quick Preview

For your enjoyment, I have made a short log of a quick walk around Hogwarts. You'll get a little glimse of the entrance hall and kitchens. You might even get to see Artemis...

I had to edit out the little maps that would appear after each room description because they didn't line up right when it was converted to html.

To see the log, you'll have to click on "read more" to get the full story.

The Entrance Hall [Hogwarts]
The school's massive entrance hall is ordaned with statues, figures, and
sculptures which decorate the sides of an enormous stone archway. Patterns
and artwork are displayed on the stone ceiling and walls. Suits of armour
and statues stand guard around the room. A large chandelier and countless
torches and candles give the hall a healthy glow. Above the staircase and
against a window, rests a large crest, enscribed with the legend 'Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry'. A wide staircase at the end of the room
leads up to the topmost floor and down into the dungeon. A door to the east
opens up to a smaller staircase, while a large door to the south leads to
the Great Hall.

enscribed with the legend 'Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry'. The
motto underneath reads 'Draco Dormeins Nunquam Titillandus. '

A Narrow Staircase [Hogwarts]
The stones which brick the walls are dripping with damp moss, which clings
between widening cracks. The cracks in the walls allow drafts to sweep
through the passage. The stone walls amplify the smallest of noises. The
water slipping between the stones slowly slides down the walls to pool at
the bottom of the stairs. The flowing water has created a slippery slime
that makes it hard to ascend or descend the stairs. To the west is the
entrance hall, while the stairs down lead to the kitchesn and Hufflepuff
common room.

Corridor Leading to the Kitchens [Hogwarts]
The corridor is decorated with several different portraits, suits of armour
stand at intervals along the walls, and a few benches are spaced down the
corridor. The corridor is long and fairly well lit; torches in iron
brackets line the walls. The corridor leads to the school's kitchens and
Hufflepuff's common room to the east. The stairs up lead to the ground
floor.

Corridor Outside the Kitchens [Hogwarts]
The corridor is long and fairly well lit; torches in iron brackets line the
walls. The corridor is decorated with several different portraits, suits of
armour stand at intervals along the walls, and a few benches are spaced down
the corridor. The portraits in this part of the corridor features pictures
of fruit. The corridor is outside school's kitchens and the Hufflepuff's
common room is to the east. To the north is the girl's bathroom.

[Exits: north east west]
A painting of a bowl of fruit hangs on the south wall of the room.
[AFK] a bronze-haired male human is standing here.

You walk through the hole.
The Kitchens [Hogwarts]
The kitchen is dominated by long rows of tables and damp air drifts through
the room. House-elves rush about carrying food, pans, and other equipment.
Along a table off to one side, elves are lined up, washing dishes and
preparing food. Mismatched pieces of crockery and utensils are scattered on
the floor or piled up in the corners. A great brick fireplace is located at
one end of the kitchen. Steam floats near the ceiling. It is very hot.

Remember this is just a sample. There is a lot more to a MUD than just this. Think of this as a screen shot in a video game.

So far Hogwarts has over 1200 rooms and that's just 2 floors and the dungeons. We've got a ton of rooms and areas outside of Hogwarts. A MUD is always being updated and new areas are constantly being added, so you can just imagine how huge this can get. laughing

That is how you move in the MUD. When you type 'north', your character moves one room north.

Biblio - 30 Oct 2004 01:15 pm

Oh, these smileys can't express the full extent of my feelings...

Sarria - 01 Nov 2004 09:23 pm

I don't get it... sad

Aniline - 01 Nov 2004 10:14 pm

Ok, what don't you get?

Think of a MUD like an interactive chat room. You enter in commands into the MUD and the MUD will feed back info, like the description of a room, a spell, an object, an npc (non-player character). You can talk and interact with other people who are also connected to the MUD, just like in a chat room.

In the example (preview) that I wrote above, I moved my character through several rooms by typing the direction I wanted to go: east, down, etc. I looked at an object in one of the rooms: look crest. And I entered a hidden room, the kitchens, by tickling a peach in a painting, just like in the books: tickle peach. In the room just before I entered the kitchen was where Artemis was standing, "a bronze-haired male human is standing here."

You can do a lot more in a MUD than just the example I made.

CEH - 01 Nov 2004 10:33 pm

You get used to MUDs after a while. They may seem boring, confusing, and hard at first, but once you get the hang of them, they can be really, really fun!

And it also helps if you have someone who's already played the game to help you out in the beginning.

I remember when I started playing Realms of Despair. I didn't know anyone, I had no idea what to do. I gave up. And then one day someone said they'd help me. ^.^ Now I love it!

You'll get used to it.

Aniline - 01 Nov 2004 11:03 pm

Exactly CEH. That's just how I started playing Discworld MUD. I died a ton of times, gave up on it a few times, tried again as a different type of character, etc.

Eventually, I figured it out, got help from other people playing, and have been addicted to MUDs every since.

The interaction between players is great in a MUD, more so than other online games, because it's like a chat room.

I can't wait for the MUD to be released just so I have people to talk to there. Building gets very boring without anything else going on.

CEH - 01 Nov 2004 11:16 pm

Will this MUD have Socials?

Aniline - 02 Nov 2004 09:16 am

Yes, it will have socials. We've just got to re-write some of them. Some of them are a bit weird.

CEH - 02 Nov 2004 12:42 pm

laughing Weird can be good. (j/k)

Orion - 02 Nov 2004 05:50 pm

I can't wait for this to be finished...As soon as I figured out what the game was I went crazy. I love these type of things. laughing But I still don't get how the interatction will work. I've never seen one like that.

Aniline - 02 Nov 2004 06:05 pm

This is how the interaction will work:

In the example I gave above, I walked my character to the kitchens. Just before I entered the kitchens, I was in a room with "a bronze-haired male human is standing here." This was actually Artemis. However, he was AFK. Otherwise I would have interacted with him in the example. We could use commands like say, shout, tell, laugh, etc. to talk to each other. We could have also attacked each other in a duel.

While playing a MUD, you aren't the only one playing. There will be hundreds of other people playing at the same time and you can talk to them and interact with them.

Stepshep - 05 Nov 2004 04:27 pm

Anyone know any good Hp Muds that are not Magic's Finest or Hogwarts thanx
wassat

persephone - 10 Nov 2004 05:02 pm

wassat k then. kinda liked it.

Aniline - 10 Nov 2004 10:27 pm

Just to let you all know... the log I posted in the full story is a little bit different from what you'll see in the MUD. Those rooms have already been editing and tweaked....

Into what, you'll have to wait and see... wink

RobertRivenno - 28 Nov 2004 09:31 pm

lol you love messing with our little minds that can't wait to be playing this game.
