Connecting to Morsmordre

There are a few ways of connecting to the game server. The one I will explain is the easiest and most common tool of connection. First off, download a program known as a 'MUD CLIENT', they aren't hard to find. Google it and you'll get a bunch pop-up on your screen. Most of them are free to use, some may ask for a registration fee, its up to you which you choose. Once you've downloaded your client of choice you should install it accordingly and open it up so you can use it. If you have trouble finding any clients online, or are still confused, here is a small list of clients I highly recommend:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SimpleMU - Literally, a very simple client to use and start on.
zMUD - A nice and easy client to use, also supports a lot of handy features. The first I ever used.
MUSHclient - A very tool enriched client, I'd only recommend to advanced users. My current client.
RoA-Client - A well-known intermediate MUD client.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each client is made differently, therefore we can't help you with how certain programs work - we didn't make them, it's your responsibility to get used to your client. They arent generally hard, in fact, most of the clients I've had over my multiple years of MUDing were easier to use than sneeze on. I would personally recommend you disable any 'MXP' or 'Pueblo' features, simply because the current codebase does not like them very much. If the client supports either or both, there should be a help section in the program that will guide you through disabling them. I also suggest making sure the output font is a variation of the 'courier' font. This is a standard MUD font and will display a lot cleaner than anything else.

Once you've figured out your way about a Client, even if you don't understand it fully, you should know where to enter MUD world details. To connect to Morsmordre, or any MUD in general; you will need the <color> and <color> number. I'll explain these for the sake of you understanding this as the most important part of connectivity.

Like any website, the only way to get to it would be typing it in the address bar. Obviously this tells the program where to go to put all those fancy websites onto you broswer screen. This works -exactly- the same for MUDs, except instead of a web browser, you use the client. The host name is the 'URL'; the exact address to connect to. A port is a little trickier to understand, but simple in concept. All websites have a web address to connect too, but they also have a hidden port. This port number is what is used to connect to the graphical website part of the site. There are thousands of ports ranging from: 1 to 9999. Plenty of different routes of access. Although you may not come across it much in connecting to a website, this is strict to MUDs. You will need to know the exact port address to be able to connect to a MUD, otherwise it may think you want to connect to the website part instead of the gaming part.

Alternatively, you can use your web browser to access the game. If your browser supports telnet based applications(most do) then you can simply type:'telnet:' before the address details. This will launch an exterior telnet program and automatically connect to the MUD. I wouldnt recommend using telnet on a long term basis as it can be very unreliable. Telnet alone doesnt have echo or input functions like MUD clients do, therefore you won't be able to see what you type - nor the result of what you entered. I recommend downloading a MUD client and using telnet only when necessary.

The Morsmordre world details are:

[HOST]mud.mugglenet.com
[PORT]5056

Browser URL: 'telnet:mud.mugglenet.com:5056'

If you have followed all of the above closely, you should be able to connect to the game. If not then I suggest checking your firewall settings. It's a very common problem for users not being able to connect. Make sure your firewall or router is letting you connect to the specified port. If you're note sure how to edit firwall or router settings be sure to consult your hardware/software manual.

I haven't been able to connect to the Morsmordre MUD. I'm not sure why this is...I've been trying with the SimpleMU client that was recommended in this topic. I don't think there's a problem with my fireall settings...

I followed all of the directions given by the SimpleMU help...When attempting to connect it stated:

Status: resolving hostname address for mud.mugglenet.com port 5056
Status: attempting connection to 64.158.56.38 5056.
Status: opening connection.
Status: attempting connection.
Status: negotiating connection.
Status: unable to connect to this site:
( #10061 ) The connection was refused by the server, verify your address and that the game is currently operating.
Sunday October 21 04:38:57 PM session closed.
Status: connection is closed.

I'm not sure what to do; this is probably because although I am not new to RP's in general, I am new to MUDs. If anyone could help that would be great!

Thanks,
Blair

Er, the port thingy can be confusing. The actual address you've got to type is:
mud.mugglenet.com:5056

Hope it helps!

Noon, I took your advice [thanks, by the way] and changed the address, but to no avail. If anyone has any other ideas for me, I'd appreciate it. Or, if you use a MUD client that's better than SimpleMU and you think it may work better, let me know.

Thanks again guys. Smile

Don't type mud.mugglenet.com:5056

just type mud.mugglenet.com
THEN type the port number in the appropriate spot.
Try it, tell me how it goes.
